Pharmacology: Zovirax cream (acyclovir) is an antiviral drug. After entering a virus-infected cell, acyclovir turns into acyclovir monophosphate, which under the action of cellular enzymes is phosphorylated to the diphosphate and triphosphate. Acyclovir triphosphate acts as a nonspecific inhibitor and substrate for viral DNA polymerase, interferes in formation of viral DNA, causing the chain to break and blocking further replication without damaging the host cells.

Indications:

  • treatment of infections of the skin and mucous membranes caused by herpes simplex virus, including primary and recurrent genital herpes
  • prevention of recurrence of infections caused by herpes simplex virus in patients with normal immune status
  • prevention of infections caused by herpes simplex virus in immunocompromised patients
  • treatment of varicella and herpes zoster
  • treatment of patients with severe immunodeficiency, mainly with HIV infection and patients after bone marrow transplantation
