Zithromax 500mg

Zithromax 500mg belongs to the classification of azalide antibiotics, a sub classification of macrolide anti-bacterial medicines. Zithromax 500mg is used for the treatment of several bacterial infections caused by broad spectrum of bacteria such as eikenella corrodens, escherichia coli, chlamydia pneumoniae, chlamydia trachomatis, haemophilus influenzae, moraxella catarrhalis, mycobacterium chelonae, mycoplasma fermentans, neisseria gonorrhoeae and ureaplasma urealyticum.

Zithromax is considered as a convenient antibacterial remedy because it can be taken either for a three day or five day course. It is available in tablets and oral suspension. The tablet form is available in the strengths of 250 mg tablets (known as Z-Pak) and 500 mg tablets (known as Tri-Pak). Zithromax for oral suspension contains 200 mg/ 5 ml Azithromycin; it is popular in the treatment of ear infections.

Zithromax Pharmacological Action

The active formulation of Zithromax 500mg known as Azithromycin effectively kills bacteria by obstructing its protein synthesis essential in the growth and multiplication process of bacteria.

Zithromax is a potent antibacterial medication that works by annihilating the life source of bacteria that will thereby prevents its growth and multiplication. When these bacteria are weakened and their growth is barred, it will be easier for the body’s immune system to fight off infections.

As a standard procedure, your health care provider will identify the type of bacteria that causes infection because there are bacteria that is not susceptible with Zithromax 500mg such as the spectrum of bacteria identified as pseudomonas aeruginosa, staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus pyogenes. There are some bacteria that developed resistance to Azithromycin in varying degree including corynebacterium amycolatum and haemophilus influenzae; hence it is important to identify what spectrum of bacteria that caused the infection.

Zithromax Indication

Zithromax (Azithromycin) 500mg is indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by broad spectrum of bacteria mentioned in the preceding “short description” outline. Specifically, the following bacterial infections can be treated with Zithromax 500mg:

  • Otitis media (infections in the middle ear).
  • Skin or soft tissue infections.
  • Bacterial infections in the upper and lower airways including pneumonia, bronchitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis and sinusitis.
  • Bacterial infections that causes cellulitis, chancroid cholera, leptospirosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, pertussis.
  • Sexually transmitted infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.
  • Gastrointestinal infections referred to as traveler’s diarrhea.

Zithromax is also used for the treatment of typhoid (mild to moderate state). Azithromycin, the active component of Zithromax has been studied for the treatment of malaria in combination with artisunate or quinine; its optimum dosage however is not yet established as of this writing.

Zithromax 500mg Mode of Administration

Zithromax 500mg is available in a form of tablet/capsules and powder for oral suspension. It is to be taken by mouth. It is prescribed as a once a day treatment for the duration of 5 days (for Zithromax Z-Pak) or 3 days (for Zithromax Tri-Pak). Its dosage and treatment duration depends on the severity of infection, the patients’ age and the body weight of the patient (for children).

Zithromax suspension may be taken in a full or empty stomach, while the capsule form must be taken following an interval before and after food intake. Zithromax 500mg capsule may be taken at least 1 hour before food intake or at least 2 hours after meal.

To get the utmost benefit of treatment, take the medication strictly according to your doctor’s instruction. Do not modify the medication by increasing or decreasing its dosage unless otherwise instructed by your health care provider. Continue the medication even if you feel better or otherwise told by your doctor.

Contraindications and Cautions

Zithromax is contraindicated to patients with a known hypersensitivity to its active ingredient azithromycin or to any of its component. Patients who displayed allergic reactions to erythromycin or other antibiotics in the same classification as macrolide antibiotics must avoid taking Zithromax 500mg.

Zithromax may aggravate other conditions or diseases. To establish safety and precaution, inform your doctor if you are diagnosed to have the following medical conditions:

  • Decreased kidney function
  • Decreased liver function
  • Heart rhythm disorder as evidenced on ECG result

Zithromax should not be used on patients who have known allergy to azithromycin and other related medicaments classified as macrolide antibiotics. Zithromax is generally safe for use to pediatric patients; however it is specifically not appropriate to pediatric patients who have a body weight below 45kg or to infant below 6 months old.

Zithromax 500mg side effects

Zithromax is generally well tolerated by the body. Side effects may occur in varying degree depending on the patient’s age, condition and other factors including medicament interactions. The following are the common side effects that is associated on the use of Zithromax:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Unexplained Rash
  • Abdominal pain

This is not the complete list of side effects, immediately inform your health care provider if you observed unusual changes on your body or symptoms of allergic reactions such as: breathing difficulty; hives; swelling in the face, mouth, lips, tongue or throat.

Zithromax Interactions

The interactions of two incompatible medicaments may contribute an increase risk of developing harsh side effects. Stoppage of either medication is not a potential recourse. In order to effectively manage medicine interactions, it is important to inform what medications you are currently taking.

The following are the medicaments that are indicated to interact with Zithromax:

  • Antacids – reduces the absorption of Zithromax, hence proper interval should be observed when taking both medicines. Take Zithromax an hour before or at least 2 hours after taking antacids.
  • Zithromax reduces the efficacy of certain medicaments including colchicine, disopyramide, refabutin and theopfylline.
  • Zithromax enhances the effects of Warfarin and other anti-coagulant medicines. Monitoring of your blood clotting time (INR) may be increased than the usual regular schedule.
  • Specific precaution from the manufacturer of certain remedies like droperidol, mizolastine, prinozide and reboxetine specifically state the non compatibility of these medicines to Azithromycin, the active ingredient of Zithromax.

This is not the complete list of medicaments that is reported to interact with Zithromax. For purposes of safety and precaution do not start a new medication (prescribed or herbal medicines) without informing your health care provider.
