Introduction: Voltaren (diclofenac sodium) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that treats pain, swelling and stiffness associated with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and  ankylosing spondylitis. The medication works by blocking the production of inflammatory mediators. 

Voltaren tablets

Pharmacology: Diclofenac sodium belongs to a group of medical preparations called NSAID's. Like other medications from this group of medicines, diclofenac sodium exerts anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic action. Action mechanism is associated with inhibiting the enzyme COX (cyclooxygenase). By inhibiting this enzyme Diclofenac sodium suppresses the production of endogenous inflammatory mediators – prostaglandins.

Diclofenac sodium relieves mild and moderate pain, eliminates stiffness and inflammation of joints

Indications: Voltaren tablets are used in symptomatic treatment of the following diseases:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Gout attack
  • Gynecological diseases accompanied by pain syndrome
  • Post-traumatic pain syndrome
  • Infectious and inflammatory diseases of the ear, nose and throat

 Contraindications: Diclofenac sodium is contraindicated for use in the following conditions:

  • Allergy to Diclofenac
  • Aggravation of stomach and duodenal ulcers
  • Bronchial asthma
    Severe liver diseases
  • Severe kidney diseases
  • Severe cardiovascular diseases
  • Diabetes
  • Bleeding of unknown origin
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding

 Make sure to inform your doctor if you drink alcohol frequently, smoke, have a history of cardiovascular diseases

Adverse effect: The most common Voltaren side effects include:

  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Bleeding
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Anemia
  • Headache
  • Itching
  • Skin rash
  • Tinnitus

Less common Diclofenac side effects include: chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, slurred speech , stomach and intestinal problems, liver damage, kidney problems, high blood pressure, signs of heart failure.

Interactions: Diclofranac sodium may interact with the following groups of drug or preparations.

  • ACE inhibitors
  • Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)
  • Beta blockers
  • Bile acid sequestrants
  • Corticosteroids
  • Diuretics
  • Immunosuppressors (cyclosporine)
  • Cardiac glycosides (digoxin)
  • Lithium preparations
  • Blood thinners
  • Anticoagulants
  • Other NSAID's
  • Thrombolytics
  • Antidepressants
  • Cancer medication (methotrexate)
  • Uricosuric drugs (probenicid)
  • Herbal supplements
  • Intermittent claudication treatment (Pentoxifylline)
