Introduction: Levothroid contains Levothyroxine sodim - analogue of thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4). Levoxyl is prescribed for the treatment of declining thyroid function and other problems characterized by insufficiency of thyroid hormones.

Levothroid

 Pharmacology: Levothroid contains the active ingredient Levothyroxine sodium which is an laevogyratory isomer of thyroxine (T4 thyroid hormone). In the organism Levothyroxine is converted into triiodothyronine (T3 hormone).  The medication acts in a similar way as thyroid hormones, it stimulates growth and development of tissues, activates metabolism. 

In low doses Levothyroxine possesses anabolic action. In recommended doses activates carbohydrate, protein and lipid metabolism, increases functional activity of CNS and cardiovascular system. In high doses the medication inhibits the production of thyrotropin releasing hormone and thyrotropic hormone.

 Indications:

 Levothroid is used to treat the following conditions:

  • Thyroid cancer (after surgery)
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Euthyroid goiter
  • Diagnostics of thyroid suppression test
  • Basedow's goiter

Patients with low levels of TSH should not use Levoxyl. The medication is not intended to reduce weight in overweight or obese patients.

 Contraindications:

Levothroid is contraindicated for use in:

  • Reactions of hypersensitivity
  • Thyrotoxicosis
  • Pituitary insufficiency
  • Adrenal cortex insufficiency
  • Myocardial infarction (heart attack) 
  • Acute myocarditis
  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Known hypersensitivity to any of medication ingredients

The medication should be used with caution in:

  • Coronary heart diseases (atherosclerosis, stenocardia, heart attack in anamnesis)
  • High blood pressure
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Malabsorption syndrome
  • Osteoporosis
  • Arrhythmias
  • Diabetes

Make sure to let your doctor know if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding.

 Adverse effect: In rare cases the medication may cause:

  • Swelling of the lips, mouth or throat
  • Dermatological reactions

High doses of Levothroid may cause symptoms of hyperthyroidism such as: increased heart rate, shortness of breath, fever, hyperactivity, hot flashes, high blood pressure, diarrhea, seizures.

 Interactions: Levothroid should not be used with the following groups of drug or preparations.

  • Antacids
  • Weight loss pills (Orlistat)
  • Seizure drugs
  • Antic
  • Xantines
  • Stomach medications (sucralfate)
  • Antidepressants
  • Anti-diabetic drugs
  • Calcium containing
  • Estrogens
  • Cardiac glycosides (digoxin)
  • Iron containing drugs and supplements

 Attention: Keep the medication out of reach of children. Store at room temperature
