Keflex generic is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. Keflex fights bacteria in the body. Keflex is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, including upper respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections.
Keflex generic
Qualitative and quantitative composition: Keflex generic contains 250 mg or 500 mg of Cefalexin (as Cefalexin Monohydrate) enclosed in gelatine capsules.
Pharmacological action: Keflex or Cefalexin is a β-lactam antibiotic which acts by inhibiting the last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis (cephalosporin group of antibiotics). It is primarily active against Gram-positive cocci, and has modest activity against Gram-negative bacilli.
Therapeutic indications: Cephalexin is administered orally in the respiratory tract, otitis media, skin and soft tissue, bone and joint, genital tract, urinary tract and dental infections by susceptible organisms.
Contraindications: Keflex generic is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to cefalexin and any other cephalosporin group of antibiotics.
Special warnings and precautions for use: Before administration of Keflex special care should be taken to identify any previous history of hypersensitivity against cephalosporin group of drugs. It should also be given with caution to patients having hypersensitivity against penicillin. Pseudomembranous colitis has also been reported in several patients treated with Keflex (as with any other broad spectrum antibiotics). So, patients suffering from diarrhea after taking Keflex should be carefully diagnosed. Keflex should be used with caution in patients suffering from renal impairment. The false positive result may be produced in Coomb’s test, glucose in urine by Benedict’s or Fehling’s solutions and with copper sulfate test tablets.
Interaction with other medicinal products: Probenecid inhibits the renal excretion of Keflex (as in case of any other β-lsactam drugs). Concomitant use of Keflex generic with other drugs like other cephalosporin, aminoglycosides, furosemide and other diuretics may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Undesirable effects: Keflex generic is a very safe drug with very few side effects noted in most of the patients who had received the drug. After thorough analysis by going through various data arranged from different clinical trials the following undesirable effects of Keflex generic can be recognized. The most common side effects that most of the patients have included diarrhea and nausea. Other rare effects are agitation, hallucinations, hepatitis, anaphylactic reactions, fever, tiredness, vaginitis, vaginal candidiasis, genital and anal pruritus, arthritis, rashes, pruritus, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, dyspepsia, eosinophilia haemolytic anaemia etc. All these effects are seen only in rare to rarest occasions. Keflex also increases the concentration of Alanine transaminase and aspartate aminotransferase in the system of patients receiving it.
Interesting facts:
- Keflex generic can be regarded as a very safe drug with side effects being very rare and are superior to penicillin in antibiotic potency.
- Cephalexin has a short half life thus requires QID dosing, i.e. need to have four doses per day.
