Dermovate Lotion

Dermovate lotion 0.05% (also called clobetasol propionate) is used to treat scalp disorders that have not responded well to other corticosteroids. There is a range of potencies of corticosteroids and clobetasol propionate is classed as a super-high-potency one. The scalp conditions this medication treats include seborrheic dermatitis, eczematous dermatitis, psoriasis, lichen planus, and lupus erythematosus. Dermovate lotion works by reducing redness, itching, and swelling.

Mechanism of Action

Dermovate lotion is a very potent corticosteroid solution used for severe inflammatory skin conditions. It works by suppressing components of the inflammatory reaction and relieving inflammation and itching. It is important to note that Dermovate lotion is indicated for control and relief of symptoms and is not curative. This medication causes vasoconstriction in the blood vessels of the skin to decrease collagen synthesis as well.

How to Use Dermovate Lotion

Apply this medication sparingly to cover the affected area of the scalp and rub gently in 1 or 2 times daily. Your total dose should not be more than 50 mL in a week. Take caution and care when using around the eyes or skin lesions.

Many things can alter the dose of Dermovate lotion that a person needs, including body weight, medical conditions, and other medications. Use the medication as prescribed and directed by your doctor for best results.

This medication should not be used for prolonged periods of time or under dressings that do not breathe. It is possible that Dermovate lotion could absorb into the bloodstream leading to unwanted side effects. It is advisable that you use Dermovate lotion only for brief periods and stop using it as soon as the problem clears.

Dermovate Lotion Side Effects

You should notify your doctor if the following side effects persist or worsen:

  • Burning, irritation, itching, dryness, or redness of the skin
  • Headache
  • Skin infection
  • Scalp skin color changes
  • Thinning of the scalp with bruising
  • Softening or tearing of the skin
  • Increased redness or scaling of skin sores
  • Hypertrichosis (excessive hair growth)

Dermovate Lotion Precautions
If you have not noticed any improvement in your scalp condition after 5 to 7 days, stop using the medication and contact your doctor.

It is important that you use Dermovate lotion exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not miss doses and if you do, apply the cream as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. Do not, however, apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Protect this medication from light and store it at room temperature.

Do not use Dermovate lotion for infected, bacterial, fungal, or viral skin lesions. These include acne vulgaris, rosacea, chickenpox, and herpes simplex.

If allergic to other corticosteroids, notify your doctor.

There is a range of potencies of corticosteroids and clobetasol propionate is classed as a "very potent" one.

If you are using special shampoos or other medications on the same area of scalp, it is recommended that you wait several minutes between the application of that product and Dermovate lotion. This will allow for better absorption and results.
