Apcalis Oral Jelly is a drug primarily used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in adult males. It is very convenient to take compared to the tablets and also get absorbed in the body much quicker. Apcalis Oral Jelly is not recommended for children and adult women. It should be kept in mind that since Apcalis Oral Jelly cannot be reckoned as an aphrodisiac, sexual stimulation is must to have an erection.

Apcalis Oral Jelly

Qualitative and quantitative composition: Apcalis Oral Jelly contains 20mg of tadalafil.

Pharmacological action: Tadalafil inhibits cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) in a selective way and this inhibition is reversible in nature. When nitric oxide is released locally during sexual arousal, cGMP levels in the corpus cavernosum is increased due to the inhibitory action of tadalafil on PDE5 resulting in relaxation of smooth muscle and inflow of blood into the penile tissues. This overall action produces a penile erection. Tadalafil cannot produce sexual stimulation, so cannot act without it. Tadalafil acts similarly through inhibition of PDE5 on cGMP concentration inside corpus cavernosum and allows relaxation in smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder, thus resulting in increased blood circulation thereby reducing benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Therapeutic indications: Apcalis Oral Jelly is primarily indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in adult males in the presence of sexual stimulation and to cure benign prostatic hyperplasia. It has no indication for women and children.

Contraindications: Apcalis Oral Jelly should not be indicated in patients having Tadalafil hypersensitivity. It showed hypotensive effects of nitrates thus concomitant use with organic nitrate should be avoided. Patients suffering from cardiac disorders (myocardial infarction, unstable angina, uncontrolled arrhythmias, hypotension, hypertension, stroke within the last 6 months) and NAION i.e. non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy in one eye (lost vision) should not be administered with Apcalis Oral Jelly.

Special warnings and precautions for use: Apcalis Oral Jelly administration should not be started in patients suffering from erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia without thorough check up to understand the exact cause of the diseases. Consideration of the cardiovascular status, hypotensive effect of nitrates, presence of carcinoma of the prostate and non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy of the patients have to be done properly in order to avoid potential risk factors.

Patients with renal and hepatic impairment should be advised against the use of Tadalafil as sufficient data on its effect on patients with such impairment is still not very clear.

In case of patients having priapism and anatomical deformation (cavernosal fibrosis, angulation or Peyronie's disease) of the penis proper treatment should be done instead of using Tadalafil as it may cause permanent loss of sexual potency.

Use of Tadalafil with CYP3A4 inhibitors should also be discouraged as this may result in increased exposure of Tadalafil.

Till date the combined effect of Tadalafil with other ED drugs have not been assessed properly, so their concurrent use is not advisable.

Interaction with other medicinal products: Interaction studies have revealed that Tadalafil may interfere with Cytochrome P450 inhibitors, Transporters (p-glycoprotein), Cytochrome P450 inducers, Nitrates, Anti-hypertensives (calcium channel blockers, doxazosin), 5- alpha reductase inhibitors (finasteride), CYP1A2 substrates (theophylline) and Ethinylestradiol and terbutaline.

But no significant effects have been noted in concomitant use with Alcohol, Cytochrome P450 metabolized medicinal products, CYP2C9 substrates (R-warfarin), Aspirin and Antidiabetics.

Undesirable effects: The common adverse effects associated with Tadalafil include back pain, headache, myalgia and dyspepsia. Increased dose of Tadalafil further increases the problems. But all these effects are usually not very severe.

Interesting facts:

  •  Daily one dose of Apcalis Oral Jelly is enough for maintaining erection for the next 36 hours in the presence of sexual stimuli.
  •  Apcalis Oral Jelly can cause sudden vision loss. Immediate discontinuation of Tadalafil and seeking medical advice is necessary.
  •  Apcalis Oral Jelly can be administered with or without food, but it is advisable to avoid fatty foods just before or after taking the medicine.
  •  Consumption of the medicine with at least a glass full of water is also advisable.
  •  It should be noted that efficiency of Apcalis Oral Jelly decreased considerably when taken with alcohol.
