Qualitative and quantitative composition: Allegra is available in 120 mg film coated tablet containing Fexofenadine hydrochloride equivalent to 112 mg of Fexofenadine. Oral suspension is available for children.


Pharmacological action: Allegra or Fexofenadine hydrochloride works by inhibiting the antigen-induced bronchospasm and histamine release from peritoneal mast cells in rats. It does not contain any sedative effect and it also does not cross the blood-brain barrier.

Therapeutic indications: Allegra or Fexofenadine hydrochloride is indicated in both children and adults for relief from seasonal and other related allergic rhinitis.

Contraindications: Allegra or Fexofenadine hydrochloride is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to fexofenadine hydrochloride and associated compounds.

Special warnings and precautions for use: Clinical experience regarding Fexofenadine hydrochloride is still inadequate, especially in elderly patients and patients with hepatic disorders. Thus caution should be used before administration of Allegra in elderly and patients with hepatic disorders. Similarly a patient having a history of cardiac problems or renal impairment and in children the use of this drug should be monitored properly. However, there is no need to change the dose of the medicine irrespective of patient condition. Adverse effects usually noted, are palpitations and tachycardia.

Interaction with other medicinal products: Fexofenadine hydrochloride is excreted unchanged as it does not undergo any biotransformation or hepatic metabolism. This implies that it will not interact with any drugs that are metabolized through the liver. But concurrent use with ketoconazole and erythromycin results in increase in plasma concentration of Fexofenadine hydrochloride by few folds. But no effect on QTc intervals is noted. There are no interactions with Omeprazole, whereas co-use with antacids having aluminium or magnesium ions decreases its absorption. So a gap of 2 hours must be maintained between these drugs.

Undesirable effects: There are still no data showing any adverse effect of Fexofenadine hydrochloride in pregnancy, lactation or during and using heavy machineries. Patients having cardiovascular disease may suffer from tachycardia and palpitations. Other common side effects of Allegra include drowsiness, dizziness, headache and nausea. Diarrhea, fatigue, insomnia, nervousness, nightmares are a few of the uncommon complication that may associate with intake of Fexofenadine hydrochloride. Rare adverse effects include skin rashes, pruritus and hypersensitive reactions (dyspnoea, anaphylaxis, flushing, and chest tightness). The most commonly associated side effects with overdose of fexofenadine hydrochloride are dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue and dry mouth.

Interesting facts:

  •   Fexofenadine hydrochloride should be avoided in case of kidney failures and allergic conditions due to other drugs.
  •   Do not use Fexofenadine hydrochloride with fruit juice.
